Award Winning Chevrolet Delray Is Up For Grabs

The fifties are widely regarded as the golden era of cars. With some of the slickest shapes known in the industry, names like Chevrolet and Cadillac built their empire on the dreamy designs that left their studios, and for good reason.

In a sea of Eldorados and Bel Airs, perhaps the Chevy Delray is a lesser known model, particularly in the 1958 model year, like the car featured here courtesy of Garage Kept Motors.

Up until 1958 the Delray was a trim level for Chevy’s lineup, yet 1958 brought with it the Delray’s own model to replace the 150. Despite its rather classical looks, the Delray was actually meant to act as a cooking model in a full-size package. As such, these cars were particularly popular amongst business owners and police departments across the country.

There's nothing economy about this Delray!. Owned originally my local racer, Bob Duelling, the car enjoyed being raced until the mid sixties. By 1963 a new 409 cubic inch motor was slotted in, the same displacement that the beast currently enjoys. The second custodian took over in 1973, and sold it on in 1977 to a friend.

Perhaps most intriguing of all is how the second owner is also the restorer who prepared this car as you see it today. Having been in a deep slumber for over 20 years, the Delray was rebought by the second custodian in 1995, yet restoration didn’t get underway for another 15 years.

The restoration was completed five years ago, with no bolt untouched. The attention to detail is evidenced by the awards won since completion. In 2014 this build was one of the top 100 in the country, winning the coveted Street Rodder Magazine Top 100 Award. With just 31,000 miles on the body, it’s surely the ultimate Delray available today.
