This 650-horsepower El Camino project is a serious drag racer that's also street-legal.

The Chevrolet El Camino is an iconic classic that combines a sporting profile with the utility of a truck. Arguably one of the most versatile collector cars out there, many of these models have been modified to add an extra turn of pace to its resume. This 1970 model, being offered by San Francisco Sports Cars, is no ordinary El Camino.

Originally designed and built by Pete Chapouris' SoCal Speed Shop, this Chevy has been transformed from an intriguing workhorse, into a serious dragster. His aim was to build a car that could challenge for victory in motorsport, but also be driven home again at the end of the day.

A rust-free donor car was sourced before being fashioned with custom tubular front frame rails. Next a potent 427 cubic-inch LS7 engine was installed, but mounted lower and further back in the chassis for better weight distribution. This El Camino’s new heart produces 650-horsepower, with that power being channeled to the rear wheels via a Tremec 6 speed manual transmission. Custom suspension was fitted, along with Baer 6-piston brakes to keep this high-performance machine in check.

It is one mean machine to look at with its go-faster stripes serving as a warning to all challengers. A neat spoiler, hood pins, and hollowed headlight lights to improve cooling are all neat details that complete this racer.

The simplistic cabin hosts a custom dashboard with an intricate series of gauges. While the minimalist two-seat interior might appear to be all about function, this car was design to be used everyday. Its owner, Spectre Racing, frequently drove it on the street to events, taking full advantage of installed comforts such as air conditioning and power steering. The Chevy is a fantastic blend of extreme performance and modern reliability.

This perfectly executed modification special has an asking price of $39,995 which we think is very reasonable considering that this car was built as a no expenses spared project. Back in 2008 the  El Camino was valued at over $180,000.

Could this 8273-mile beast be your next track weapon?
