Porsche Revives Brumos IMSA Livery For The Daytona 24 Hours

For every immortal racing car, there is a legendary livery to go with it. Think back to the Gulf Racing colors on a Porsche 917, the distinctive 555 scheme on Subaru rally cars, or the Alitalia paintwork pasted on the legendary Lancia Stratos. Porsche celebrated its 70th anniversary last year by fashioning its 911 endurance racers in retro colors, something that was so well received that Porsche will do the same for the 2019 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring races.

With the iconic Le Mans ‘pink pig’ and Rothmans paint schemes revived last year, Porsche's stateside RSR racers will sport the colors of the highly successful Brumos Porsche team. The distinctive white cars with blue and red stripes scored 15 titles and 48 victories in International Motor Sport Association (IMSA) events.

It’s apt that the reborn livery will make its debut at Daytona as Brumos always performed well at the endurance event, scoring victories in 1973, 1975, 1978, and 2009.

Brumos was one of the first teams to used a Porsche vehicle for its racing campaign in 1955, but the racing effort itself originates from a Miami Springs car dealership owned by Hubert Brundage. The Brumos name comes from the telex address of BRUMOS the dealer had.

The team saw most of its success when co-owner Peter Gregg joined as a driver, and made car number 59 synonymous with success after four titles in the North America sports car series.

Known as ‘Peter Perfect’ in racing circles, Gregg commented ‘Brumos was a real icon in motor racing thanks to its many successes. The name was known around the world,” He continued, “No matter if we competed in Porsche sports cars or Daytona Prototypes with Porsche engines, Brumos was always one of the premier teams.”

Sadly, the team entered difficult waters in 2013, and while there was a brief return in 2015, the racing program ultimately came to an end. This historic livery on the latest Porsche 911 RSR racing cars is a great homage to an iconic name in endurance racing.

Porsche isn't the only manufacturer harking back to past glories at this year’s 24 Hours of Daytona, as Ford is doing the same. The blue oval’s Ford GTs, run by the Chip Ganassi Racing team, are bringing two retro liveries back to life. Car 66 will wear a Roush Racing Motorcraft scheme seen on the Daytona winning Ford Mustang from 1985. Sister car 67 will feature the timeless green and white stripes of Castrol.

These handsome cars will make their debut on 26 - 27 January 2019 at the 24 Hours of Daytona. We can wait to see these retro cars in action!
